It’s harder to write something short than something long.
So this blog post looks at how to write your Twitter biography, which is only 160 characters (equivalent to a tweet of 140 characters plus 20-character username).
It’s relatively easy for a business-owner to write about their business. After all, you are immersed in it for eight or ten (or twenty) hours every working day. The trouble is, you need to write your bio in language that will represent your unique brand identity AND appeal to your target audience AND stand out from your competition AND maybe include a call to action.
Here are some tips to help give your bio more impact…
Top tip: The word ‘you’ is considered critical in marketing communications
Write ‘bottom up’ not ‘top down’
Don’t say ‘We offer…’ Instead say ‘You can choose…’
Write singular not plural
Don’t say ‘Dogs love our product…’ Instead say ‘Your dog will love our product…’
Assume purchase
Don’t write ‘We can provide…’ Write ‘You will receive…’
Try Q&A format
‘Experiencing anxiety? Our online meditation programme will help you find inner peace’
Try Problem: Solution format
‘Being a parent means doing everything you can to protect your child. As both a mum and a recruitment expert, I’ll source the perfect nanny for your family…’
Use sensory language
‘Imagine the scent of freshly baked bread. Now imagine that scent in your own kitchen. Now book one of our bread-making courses…’
Use adjectives that trigger emotions
‘Bring your party to life with traditional candyfloss and retro sweets…’
Keep it short
‘For unusual craft shapes handmade at a family-run workshop, choose ready-made or DIY…’
Demonstrate credibility
‘Transform your garden this spring with stunning hanging baskets from your friendly local florist. RHS qualified. Gold award holder.’
Choose a tone of voice to match your brand
If fun is a brand value, make it informal e.g. include dialogue ‘Hola! You and your children can learn Spanish the quick and easy way with…’
If not, use more formal language e.g. ‘Accounting and bookkeeping services for small businesses in Oxted delivered by a qualified professional…’
Prove your claims with numbers
‘Steel-frame buildings from a family firm founded in 1985. You can depend on our reputation – 9/10 customers have stayed with us since day 1.’
Consider including a call to action
